Why Electrolytes Matter for Fertility
Electrolytes — sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride — regulate fluid balance, muscle function, and cellular signaling. For fertility specifically, adequate hydration supports cervical mucus production (the transport medium for sperm), uterine blood flow (critical for implantation), and progesterone production (the corpus luteum requires adequate blood flow to function).
Dehydration thickens cervical mucus, potentially creating a hostile environment for sperm. It also reduces blood volume, which can impair the hormonal signaling between your brain and ovaries. In summer, when you’re losing more fluid through sweat, electrolyte supplementation can bridge the gap between drinking water and actually absorbing it.
What to Look For (and Avoid)
Sodium (500–1000mg per serving), potassium (200–400mg), magnesium (50–100mg). Clean ingredient lists with no artificial colors, no sucralose, no acesulfame-K. Real flavoring from fruit or citric acid.

How Much to Drink
For most TTC women, 1 serving of electrolytes daily is sufficient — in addition to your regular water intake (2.5–3 liters). Increase to 2 servings on days with heavy exercise, extreme heat, or if you notice signs of dehydration (dark urine, headaches, dry mouth, reduced cervical mucus).
During the luteal phase (post-ovulation, pre-period), progesterone naturally increases water retention and can make you feel bloated. Electrolytes actually help with this by improving sodium-potassium balance — counterintuitive, but adding sodium helps your body release excess water.
